Staff Picks – March 2018

As part of our new season announcement, we have decided to ask the wonderful people who know the theatre best, what shows they are particularly excited about in this brochure.

Stephen Crocker – Chief Executive

Kate O’Donnell – You’ve Changed

“I saw this show in Edinburgh last year and it is one of the most brutally honest, in your face and hilariously funny shows I have seen. Kate O’Donnell uses her incredible story to de-mystify the transitioning experience and break down taboos around trans issues. After the success of Creative Matters: Gender & Sexual Identity last September, which saw a fantastic representation from the trans community, I’m thrilled we can bring this iconic show to Norwich.”

Rowan Whiteside – Playhouse Marketing & Communications Officer

SIX the Musical

“I’m really thrilled about forthcoming pop musical SIX, which gives voice to Henry VIII’s much maligned wives. It’s gutsy, hilarious, and a well-overdue look at the women who made Henry so famous. Think Anne Boleyn doing Beyoncé, Catherine Howard doing Hamilton! The Playhouse is co-producing the show with Kenny Wax & Global Musicals, and the Theatre Royal – it’s a first for us, and I’m delighted that we’re making our debut with such a funny, fabulous, and sassy show!”

Emily Thurston – Box Office

Peppa Pig’s Adventure!

“Working in the box office means I hear first-hand the excitement of small children when their parents call up to book for a show like Peppa Pig. I know from my own experience that there’s nothing more magical than seeing your children completely enraptured by live theatre and I am lucky to be able to treat my 3 young children to experience most of the family shows that come to Norwich Theatre Royal. Peppa Pig, more so than any other show they’ve seen, has held them in total un-fidgety awe. They are thrilled that Peppa Pig is returning to the stage this autumn, as am I.”

Rosa Cooper-Davies – Community Participation Assistant

Love From A Stranger & Theatre Café

“I’m really looking forward to Love From A Stranger coming in July. I’m really into crime and suspense stories, dramas and podcasts, so to see some Agatha Christie on stage would be fantastic! Not only this, we will soon launch our Theatre Café, which will include a Love From A Stranger session, where we will talk about how suspense is created on stage and how this is different to film and TV. I definitely won’t be missing that! It’ll be fantastic to have some drama noire of the sort we don’t see very often here!”

John Bultitude – Communications Manager

Glorious

“The imagination, skill and flair coupled with a natural ability for storytelling make Fly No Filter a must-see hip-hop theatre company. Their work as part of Breakin’ Convention here last year was inspiring and I cannot wait to see their latest work. Their ability to translate the issues and reality of contemporary life into an engaging piece of hip-hop is enviable. Glorious, which explores different types of love, looks like being no exception.”

Martin Brooker – Box Office

The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company

When I was at school I sang in concerts as a pirate, a naval deckhand, a Japanese courtier and a jury member. Light-hearted operettas are not too popular these days and not often performed, so it is most welcome to see the return of The National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company to Norwich. Their attention to detail with costumes, lighting, acting and singing really do make you feel like you are watching an original Victorian production.
